About Hillsborough – History and Culture

Hillsborough, a charming Georgian village in County Down, Northern Ireland, is steeped in history and royal connections. Founded in the early 18th century by the Hill family, the village grew around Hillsborough Castle, which has been the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and now hosts members of the British Royal Family during visits. The Hills – Marquesses of Downshire – shaped the village's elegant architecture, with wide streets, listed buildings, and a distinctive triangular square.

The village played a key role in the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798, when local gentry supported the Crown. Later, Hillsborough became a centre for linen production and agriculture. In the 20th century, the village transitioned to a commuter and tourist hub for Belfast. The signing of the Hillsborough Agreement in 1985 brought international attention, as it formalised Anglo-Irish cooperation.

Today, Hillsborough blends refined heritage with modern living. Its cultural scene includes the annual Oyster Festival, art exhibitions at the Castle, and traditional music sessions in local pubs.
