Michael Sheen to Lead BBC Doc on Welsh Chemical Scandal
Michael Sheen to Lead BBC Documentary Exploring Claims of Chemical Contamination in His Native Wales
In a project that blends investigative journalism with deeply personal stakes, Michael Sheen is set to front a new two-part factual series for the BBC titled Buried (working title). The documentary will see the Good Omens star return to the communities of South Wales to investigate long-standing claims of toxic chemical dumping—a story Sheen says has "troubled Wales for decades."
The series serves as a television expansion of the award-winning BBC Radio 4 podcast Buried: The Last Witness, which first brought these alarming environmental allegations to light.
A Decade-Long Mission
For Sheen, who was raised in Port Talbot, the investigation is far from a standard hosting gig.Almost ten years ago, he met with Douglas Gowan, a researcher and whistleblower who spent his life trying to sound the alarm about "forever chemicals" buried in the Welsh countryside.
Gowan claimed that in the 1960s and 70s, thousands of tonnes of highly toxic polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were dumped into landfills, such as the Brofiscin Quarry near Llantrisant. He warned that these chemicals, which do not biodegrade, were leaching into the soil, water, and local food chain.Gowan passed away in 2018, but before his death, he recorded his final testimony with Sheen, providing the actor with a treasure trove of documents and evidence.
The Search for Truth
In the upcoming series, cameras follow Sheen as he attempts to verify Gowan's claims and understand the lasting impact on the region. The investigation is set to feature:
-
Whistleblower Testimony: Utilizing the recordings Sheen made with Gowan before his death.
-
Community Impact: Meetings with local families who believe their health has been affected by the proximity to these dumpsites.
-
Scientific Inquiry: Interviews with forensic scientists and medical experts to determine the current levels of contamination.
-
Political Accountability: A look into claims of "conspiracy, complicity, and denial" regarding how these secrets stayed hidden for so long.
"Insidious" Secrets Beneath the Surface
Speaking about the commission, Sheen said: "I first met Douglas Gowan nearly ten years ago, and his warnings about these chemicals stayed with me.In this series, we try to uncover the truth about what is beneath our feet... and understand how something so insidious could stay buried for so long."
The series is a co-production between Wall to Wall and Smoke Trail Productions.Jack Bootle, the BBC’s Head of Specialist Factual, noted that the series provides a "unique opportunity" to discuss the national impact of "forever chemicals" through the lens of one of the country's most respected storytellers.
Broadcast Details
Buried is currently in production and is expected to air on BBC Two, BBC One Wales, and BBC iPlayer later in 2026. The documentary arrives at a time of heightened environmental awareness in the UK, as regulators and the public grapple with the legacy of industrial waste and its long-term health implications.
