Russell Tovey Returns to Donmar Warehouse in The Guilty
Russell Tovey-Led THE GUILTY and More Set For Donmar Warehouse 2026 Season
The Donmar Warehouse has officially unveiled its highly anticipated 2026 season, marking a bold chapter under the leadership of Artistic Director Tim Sheader. The centerpiece of the announcement is the return of stage and screen star Russell Tovey, who will lead a tense new world-premiere thriller in the intimate Covent Garden space.
Russell Tovey in 'The Guilty'
Russell Tovey (Angels in America, The History Boys) headlines "The Guilty," a real-time thriller by Chloë Moss (This Wide Night). Based on the acclaimed Danish film Den Skyldige (and the later Hollywood adaptation), the play follows Joe, a police officer on the night shift who receives a frantic emergency call from a woman named Emily.
As the night unfolds, Joe must scramble to decode fragmented clues while battling his own mounting sense that nothing is as it seems. Directed by Felix Barrett, the visionary founder of the immersive theater company Punchdrunk, this production marks Barrett's Donmar debut and runs from June 20 to August 15, 2026.
World Premiere: 'Mass' Directed by Carrie Cracknell
The season opens with another world premiere, "Mass," written by Fran Kranz. Adapted from Kranz’s award-winning 2021 film, the play depicts two sets of parents meeting in the quiet room of a church to confront a shared tragedy.
Directing her first production for the Donmar, Carrie Cracknell leads a powerhouse cast including:
-
Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood)
-
Monica Dolan (Mr Bates vs The Post Office)
-
Paul Hilton (The Inheritance)
-
Lyndsey Marshal (The Hours)
"Mass" is scheduled to run from April 18 to June 6, 2026, with a press night on April 29.
A Major Revival and Family Drama
The latter half of the season features a mix of classic reimagining and contemporary storytelling:
-
A Month in the Country: Director Lyndsey Turner returns to the Donmar to helm a major revival of Brian Friel’s adaptation of the Ivan Turgenev classic. The production explores the arrival of a young tutor who disrupts a seemingly contented household. (August 22 – October 3, 2026).
-
Ilford Boy: The season concludes with the world premiere of a "joyful and moving" family drama by Danny Lee Wynter. Directed by Tim Sheader, the play follows a mixed-race teenager growing up in 90s East London. (October 10 – November 28, 2026).
Accessibility and Tickets
In keeping with the Donmar’s mission to foster a new generation of theatergoers, the venue has confirmed the continuation of its £20 ticket scheme for audiences aged 35 and under. Additionally, over 1,800 free tickets will be provided to local schools throughout the season.
Public booking for the Donmar Warehouse 2026 season officially opened on February 6, 2026.
