The role of the science technician is fundamental to the success of any science department. Recognizing this, The Association for Science Education has curated a bespoke one-day symposium in Liverpool dedicated entirely to the technical staff who make practical science possible. This event is designed to be highly hands-on, moving away from theoretical lectures and into the laboratory environment. Participants will rotate through various "skill stations" where they can master complex practical setups, from advanced microbiology techniques to the maintenance of delicate physics equipment.
The symposium also addresses the critical area of Health and Safety and COSHH regulations. Expert advisors will be on hand to provide updates on the latest CLEAPSS guidance, ensuring that all attendees are equipped to manage risk effectively in their home institutions. Beyond the technical skills, the day focuses on the professional recognition of technicians through the RSciTech and RSci professional registers. Mentors will be available to guide attendees through the application process, highlighting the importance of professionalizing the technician workforce. This is a unique opportunity for technicians from across the Liverpool City Region to build a support network, share "lab hacks," and discover new ways to support the delivery of high-impact practical science in schools and colleges.
