Cyclosporiasis Cases Rise Among UK Travellers Returning From Mexico: Health Officials Issue Fresh Warning

A growing number of UK travellers returning from holidays in Mexico have been diagnosed with cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal infection that causes prolonged diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Health authorities are urging holidaymakers to remain vigilant after a noticeable increase in reported cases during the peak summer travel season.

According to the latest reports, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recorded 67 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis between late April and mid-July 2026. Most of the infected individuals had recently travelled to popular Mexican tourist destinations, including all-inclusive resorts in Cancún and the Riviera Maya. Public health officials believe additional cases may emerge as more travellers return from overseas holidays.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which spreads through contaminated food or water rather than direct person-to-person contact.

Fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs, berries, and salads are commonly associated with outbreaks when they become contaminated during cultivation, harvesting, or food preparation.

Health experts explain that symptoms usually begin about one week after exposure, although they can appear anywhere between two and fourteen days later. The illness is best known for causing persistent watery diarrhoea, sometimes described as "explosive diarrhoea." Other symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, and occasionally a low-grade fever. Without appropriate treatment, symptoms may continue for several weeks or recur after initially improving.

The increase in UK cases comes as North America is also experiencing one of its largest recorded outbreaks of cyclosporiasis. In the United States, health authorities are investigating thousands of infections

linked to contaminated produce, including iceberg lettuce distributed through commercial food supply chains. Investigations remain ongoing as officials work to identify and contain additional sources of contamination.

Medical experts advise travellers to take preventive precautions while abroad. Drinking bottled or properly treated water, avoiding ice made from untreated water, thoroughly washing or peeling fruits, exercising caution with raw salads, and maintaining good hand hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of infection.

Travellers who experience persistent diarrhoea after returning home should seek medical advice promptly, as laboratory testing is often required to confirm the infection. The recommended treatment for cyclosporiasis is the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), which is effective in most cases.

Although cyclosporiasis is generally treatable, untreated infections can lead to dehydration, nutritional deficiencies, and prolonged illness, particularly among young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Public health officials continue to monitor the situation closely while reminding travellers that even luxury resorts cannot entirely eliminate the risk if contaminated food enters the supply chain.

As international travel continues during the summer holiday season, health agencies are encouraging travellers to remain aware of food safety practices and seek medical attention if symptoms persist after returning from affected regions. Early diagnosis and treatment remain the most effective ways to prevent complications and ensure a full recovery.
